We
leave from Phuket in the afternoon by minivan and head off to explore
the Bay of Phang Nga in a longtail boat. On the way we make a stop at the Monkey Cave Temple.
Afterwards, we
cruise through mangrove forest in a longtail boat.
The Bay of Phang Nga is
known for its beautiful limestone rock formations and its many waterways
in mangrove forest.

|
On the island
of Koh Panyi we visit the Islamic sea gypsies, who live on pile
dwellings built in a bay against the face of a sheer cliff.
|
|
Here you can
explore this village which is entirely built on stilts over the
sea. There is a school and a mosque and a lively market. During
low tide one can see mud skippers looking for food. Due to the many
fish restaurants on the island, there are always some sea hawks
in the neighborhood, many of whom come all the way to the
village. Many villagers also hold pets, such as gibbons and
birds which they hang in beautiful crafted cages in front of
their homes. |
 |
 |
Besides lime stone
cliffs, there are also many caves, at least one of which is a tunnel cave, that
during low tide can be entered by our longtail boat, to explore the many
stalactites and swifts living there. There are also lagoons, fish breeding farms, mangrove
bushes, as well as many idyllic sandy beaches, some of which are
permanently inhabited by local fishing families. |
|
Since mangrove
is a habitat for many species of animal, you are likely to see
some wildlife. Before heading
back we visit the renowned Nail Rock Island, in Thai known as
Koh Tah Puh, literally 'crab-eye island', with its long
landing-stage built in sea.
It is part of Ao
Phang Nga National Marine Park and after a scene of a 007-movie
was filmed here, it was nicknamed James Bond Island. |
