Chao Phraya River

Dinner Cruise on Mekhala

Wat Arun

Rama VIII Bridge

Grand Palace

Memorial Bridge

We embark on the Mekhala for a cruise up the Chao Phraya River, with spectacular views of the illuminated Grand Palace and Wat Arun, the famous Temple of Dawn. A delicious Thai set dinner is served on board while watching a beautiful sunset. We slowly cruise back to our starting point, where we disembark and our tour ends. On route we also see the Rama VIII Bridge and the Memorial Bridge.

Mekhala, the goddess of lightning and of the waters and sea, is the opponent of Ramasoon, the thunder god. She is a beautiful nymph who was born from the frothing white foam of the sea. She can fly at her will and she often amuses herself playing about in the air and in the clouds carrying a crystal ball, her weapon of protection. If she turns this crystal ball, she can by her willpower cause it to shoot out fearful flashes of blinding light.

The name of our traditional wooden boat is Mekhala, which is the Thai name for the goddess of lightning and, especially in Khmer mythology, also the goddess of the waters and sea.

The beauty and crystal ball of Mekhala attracted Ramasoon, so he persuaded his friend Rahu, the god of darkness , to create a murkiness of black and ominous clouds to help conceal himself, in order to capture the lovely nymph and carry her away to his den.

Departure every Saturday at 17h30 from Wat Yannawa pier and end at the same place around 21h00. You will be given instructions how to reach the pier by sky train or taxi. Transfers from and to the hotel are not included, but can be arranged upon request. Included are a  welcome drink and snacks upon arrival on board, a Thai set dinner on board, fruit, coffee, tea, & drinking water, service and Group Insurance. From the pier where our excursion ends it is only a short distance by taxi to the nightlife of Pat Pong or Suan Lum Night Bazaar, for those who want to explore the city's famous nightlife on their own, a bit later into the night.
